Mistkäfer aus Ägypten im Tiergarten Nürnberg

Mistkäfer aus Ägypten im Wüstenhaus

Bild/Foto

Missing pictures in diaspora posts

Hello !Hubzilla Support Forum !

I cannot see pictures in some Diaspora posts anymore (e.g. from @incontinenciasuma@joindiaspora.com ). Others seem to be still fine (e.g. from @Deerbard ). Is this a problem with the Diaspora plugin or with the Diaspora server? Confusing thing is that both accounts are on joindiaspora.com.

Was something changed with the Diaspora plugin lately? Did I miss some setup option?
 via Diaspora

After an utils/udall (on master) it works fine, again.

Thanks!

Problems that are already solved are the best ;)

Amazon ermöglicht Live-Gesichtserkennung für ganze Städte

Bild/Foto

Amazons Gesichtserkennung Rekognition ermöglicht, ganze Städte in Echtzeit zu überwachen. In den USA wird Rekognition bereits eingesetzt. US-Bürgerrechtler fordern ein Ende dieser Überwachung.
Tom
 via Diaspora

!Hubzilla Support Forum

I have a very strange behaviour at the moment: I wrote a longer post for my forum, shared it as public, but it appears as a private post then. The delivery report lists only the server adress itself with status "added to queue".  I tried several times, it always gets this strange behaviour.

To check if something is wrong I sended a "Test" post after that which is shown as expected. Then I tried again the longer post: same thing as before.

Has anybody any idea what the problem could be? O.o

Yes. That's the new way of posting privately to a forum, but the regex seems to be a bit greedy. I'll have a look later.

At least I learned something... thanks, Mike! :)

A fix has been submitted.

Here's the reason... if you used a privacy tag and mis-typed the tagged channel name, you could end up with a post that you intended to be private being completely public. This is a complicated challenge for us because we often can't tell the difference between the privacy tag sequence when it is used as a privacy tag vs when it is part of the message text. For the moment we will no longer force a private post if you use a privacy tag sequence and we can't find any private recipients. Eventually this will need to be a preference because it's guaranteed somebody will accidentally do the wrong thing and make something public they didn't want to be public and blame us for it.

Web-Links in Footer

Hello, !Hubzilla Support Forum !

Is it possible to create a global footer with (web) links for my complete Hub?

Or can I place links elsewhere in a way that they remain visible on any site within my hub?

Ha, those nasty CODE blocks were breaking the layout! fix applied

I still find it way too javascript-heavy for phones

I still think theres still a need for a lightweight theme for phones

Even on a not-so-old phone that manages to render some of a Hubzilla page it still takes a very long time to do it - like minutes!
guessing a lot of phones don't have enough ram to do it without hardcore swapping.

in fact for phones I'd be wary of anything depending much on javascript

Don't forget they do still sell new very cheap $20 or so "dumb phones" in stores with browsers in them that probably aren't much different to the "up browser" on the flipphone I used more than a decade and a half ago.
(those probably can't even execute javascript and even css support might be poor if there at all!)

There are probably still more than a few people out there in the real world using phones like that too.

but also not surprised by the lask of such themes either given that it's so hard nowdays to do cross-browser testing

How do people test multiple versions of more recent browsers these days? - please don't say its ALL done in vm's !
(nearly always way too frustratingly slow to even start up! .. and nowdays that seems quite a lot worse than only a few years ago)

even for windows versions, in recent years increasingly a lot of them don't even work in wine!
(years ago most of them did - even some versions of IE worked in that!)

and emulating android? . .. 10 minutes or more to start a vm? .. gave up on that idea

It isn't free past the trial period, but I know the developers at work have used BrowserStack for cross-browser (including phone browsers) testing.

Achsooo... :-o

HEUTE in Nürnberg!

!Hubzilla Support Forum I deleted some test channels and I noticed that the short name of the channels reamains unavailable for new channels.

Is this a temporary lock or are once used channel names gone forever, even after deleting the channel?
  zuletzt bearbeitet: Sun, 29 Apr 2018 08:49:25 +0200
We could free them up after a few days (they do need some time to notify everybody in the social graph that they are gone). We don't delete them though because it creates issues in other networks where the username is your identity. If these channels made connections with anybody on other networks, you will probably not be able to successfully re-use them ever. If connections were completely within Huzilla you can delete the channel record if you desire.

The channels made connections to Diaspora, so they are gone, I guess. Now that you say I remember that the Diaspora ID will stay in their system. I didn't thought about that... at least now I know why the channel names aren't reusable.

Thanks, Mike!

Anyone using #qubesos 4.0, yet?

Since there is no in-place upgrade I am not sure whether I won't stick to 3.2.1 for a while. Or is it worth the effort of reinstalling the os?

Communities in Hubzilla

!Hubzilla Outreach

I think one of the great advantages of Hubzilla is the possibility to create forum-like communities with some special topic. This is a good thing to spread the word. If you are interested in Hubzilla and anything else: create a community (like I did for our regular pub meetings). I do not need to tell people about Hubzilla in the first place, but I tell them "we also have an online community to coordinate our meetings" and if they are interested I will tell about Hubzilla; if they are happy joining the community and don't care about the technical details I don't have to bother them with it.

You could create communities like that for any kind of group, scene, community, party, ... This will help bring people and "life" into Hubzilla. We do not need to talk about Hubzilla and funny cat gifs all the time ;)

With clones and nomadic identities someday someone will tell you "I like the idea of your book collector forum... is it in Hubzilla? I have an account in my old timer car community, maybe I will just clone it to your server."

That would be great!

I also think that regional communities are a great idea.

A topic related to a certain city or region makes it far easier to meet people who might be interested in your forum and are not on Hubzilla, yet, and tell them about your community ;)

That is what we are trying to fire off from this hub, Askeröd is a small community in southern of Sweden with an engaged local group with focus of the time that has been (when there was a railway station) and the time that is to come (ability to live and work).

We are not many users yet and only few of them are active but we are know and there is invites sent to around 20 persons.

there is invites sent to around 20 persons

That is exactly what I mean with the advantage of regional topics -- you can invite persons far easier, when you know them or are able to meet them somewhere ;)
Multiple Profiles

!Hubzilla Support Forum Hello all!

I am checking out multiple profiles and have some questions about it:

1. Besides the Default Profile I created two more profiles, say Profile-2 and Profile-3 and set visibility for another channel for both Profile-2 and Profile-3 so that the other channel would be allowed to see all three profiles. Actually the other channel sees Profile-3 -- is it always the "last" allowed profile that will be displayed?

2. Is there an overview about what contact sees what profile? I guess otherwise it won't be easy to manage your profiles if you have more than one besides the Default...

3. Can you inherit field entries in profiles? Like e.g. you write your country to the Default Profile, your exact city in Profile-2 and additionally your birthday in Profile-3. Do I have to write the country in all three profiles or could I somehow use the information of the Default Profile in the other two profiles and the City information from Profile-2 also in Profile-3? (The idea would be to have one "single source of truth" in case you update some information -- if it is only written in one place you cannot forget to update it in some other places)

4. I guess this is a bug: when I write my birthday as YYYY-MM-DD (like 1968-12-27) the year will disappear after "Send", so that only month and day are saved (12-27). It also says "Age: 0" below the field. Am I doing it wrong? Could you replace that TextBox with some Calender picker, please? ;)

Thanks in advance for your answers and in general for the great work you all do! :)

Lol

If you edit the connection you can see and change which (single) profile has been assigned to this connection. Use the fast forward and reverse buttons to view/change several connections. There is an alternate interface available from the profiles page where you can quickly move several connections to a profile. If you move them to a new one, they lose access to any old one they were assigned.

When you create the profile to begin with you can choose to clone an existing profile (profile editor, profile tools, clone this profile), then change whatever you desire for the new profile while keeping the basic information from the original.

#4 was a bug. It was fixed in the dev branch a week or two ago. The year is optional. If you provide a year we'll calculate your age, if you don't we won't.

That was the way I used. I didn't notice that the permission of the other profile(s) were changed, too. With Edit Connections -- chose the one profile to show -- things become clearer.

Yes, but then the information is copied to another location and not linked. Assume I move to another city, I will have to change any profile that contains the information, won't I?

I see that changing the city may not be the best example... say you want to have identical key word lists for both your Default and your "Colleagues and Business Partners" profile but a different list for your "Close Friends" profile and things may get more complicated.

Bugs that are not only known but also already fixed are the best ones! Thanks! :)

!Hubzilla Support Forum Has anybody thought about what the #GDPR means for us hub-operators?

Especially the #RightToErasure will be hard to fulfill in a decentralized server network, won't it? Is it enough for the user to be able to delete his channel or account?

If you asked your server to transmit that info to somebody else's, it becomes your problem with that other person's server if you want it deleted.

Yeah... And what about federated posts in my server -- are they gonna be deleted, if the user deletes bis vor her account (in any protocol available)?

If not I need a possibility to erase the users post from my database, don't I?

ZOT has deletion. Other protocols might not have. In those cases of the user contacts you and proves you he is who he says he is, you might have to remove the posts from the database.

However, it's kind of a grey are when you talk about posts. Yoy may claim that it's your copy of a post you received, and as long it's not public it is your data as much as it's theirs. You can't ask me to delete all emails you sent me.

So perhaps instead of deleting you will simply make them not public. That's really grey area.

And, of course, for all I said, IANAL.

!Hubzilla Support Forum Hey everybody! I have a #question ! :)

In my Connections app I have a link "Recent activities" for all contacts. This is very handy for non-hubzilla contacts, e.g. to see their Diaspora activities within Hubzilla where I can comment anything.

But in the Directory app when I search for some user I see no possibility to see their activities, but surfing to their actual Diaspora stream. But there I cannot comment, since the pod wants me to log in first.

Am I missing something? Or is there no possibility to react to (public) Diaspora posts without connecting to the author first?

You can comment on diaspora posts from within your streams (network activity or public stream). Each post has a dropdown menu. If you click on actvity/posts you will also get the recent activities.

What about reshared posts? That is the scenario where the question came up to me.

Whenever I see some reshared "[xy] wrote the following [post]: hello I am *newhere" I would comment the resharing instead of the original post, wouldn't I?

But when I click on the "post" link I would see the Diaspora side where I am not logged in.

When I click on the "xy" link I would also come to Diaspora.

When I try to search the Diaspora id in the Directory I could connect to the new user, but again I cannot find the post as hubzilla stream item to comment it.

What am I missing?

If the post was not imported by your channel or any other channel on your hub, you will not be able to comment on it. There is no functionality to import posts of contacts we are not connected to that i know of.

Honestly i am not sure if that even works in diaspora that way.

Public Money? Public Code!

Wow!
